After School Reading Program

With support from the Telus Thompson Okanagan Community Board and the Foord Family Foundation and in partnership with the Okanagan Boys and Girls Club, we were able to offer and after school reading program. Students enrolled with the OBGC after school program were able to participate in the program at no charge.

The program is designed for students in grades 2 to 4 who would benefit from some extra reading support delivered in a fun and interactive way by experience teachers. This support allowed for 2 terms of 18 sessions conducted 2x per week for about an hour.

Be Screen Free with Me!

The Literacy Society of the North Okanagan partnered with the North Okanagan Early Years Council (Early Learning Action Team) on a screen smart project. The goal is to encourage parents to spend more screen free time with their pre-schooler to build early literacy and language skills.

Tools were created to raise awareness which included a playful banner, phone stickers, a family challenge with a prize draw, and resources that would help families with developmentally appropriate screen-time management.

Financial Literacy

The Literacy Society of the North Okanagan, along with our community partners, has recognized Financial Literacy as an area for development locally. We are preparing workshops and hope to pilot some new initiatives this year.

Literacy at Play

Speaking, reading, singing, listening, writing, drawing, movement, and play all contribute to early language and literacy development in young children. Literacy at Play is the premise that placing foundational literacy experiences in play and other outdoor spaces that children frequent will also support the development of early literacy skills.

Playful words, rhymes and images spark a child’s curiosity. Prompts encourage conversation, games and sharing with a parent or older children. The key is to choose words that relate to their context in meaningful and engaging ways.

Learn how you can implement literacy at play in your own outdoors spaces by checking out the resource kit.
The ideas are endless. Let us know what you have done in your play space!

Books for Babies

The Literacy Society of the North Okanagan has partnered with the Vernon Health Unit to provide “books for babies” at their immunization clinics. Families are presented with a new high-quality book to share with their little one and are encouraged to read daily with their children to support their language and literacy development. Thanks to generous donations, thousands of books have been distributed over several years.
