FAMILY LITERACY
Supporting your child's
literacy journey.
Every child's literacy journey looks a little different. Whether your child loves books, is learning to read, avoids reading whenever possible, or simply needs more opportunities to play and explore with language, there are lots of ways families can support literacy at home and in the community.
The Literacy Society of the North Okanagan offers free literacy opportunities, family events and resources to help children and families build skills, confidence and a love of learning.
BORROW AND EXPLORE
Home Kits

Borrow a themed Home Kit and bring literacy and learning home.
Each kit includes books, activities and hands-on ideas for families to explore together. Kits are borrowed for three weeks and are designed to make learning fun, interactive and easy to do at home.
Explore a topic. Read together. Try something new.
Babies and preschoolers
Books for Babies
In partnership with the Vernon Health Unit, our Books for Babies program helps families discover the joy and importance of reading together from an early age.
Families receive a brand-new, high-quality children's book at their baby's first immunization appointment, introducing the importance of reading together right from the beginning. When their child receives their kindergarten-age immunizations, families receive another book to celebrate this exciting milestone and encourage a continued love of reading.
By providing books at these two important stages of childhood, the program helps make reading accessible to families, encourages daily reading habits and supports early language development, family bonding and school readiness. Most importantly, it helps nurture a lifelong love of books and learning.

STORYWALKS®
Explore, discover a story and make reading an adventure!

Our StoryWalks® transform community spaces into interactive reading adventures! Families follow a designated route, discovering pages of a children's book along the way while enjoying the outdoors, exploring their community and reading together.
We also collaborate with local organizations to bring StoryWalks® to community events. Past partners include ORL, BGC, SD22, Mackie Lake House and NatureKidsBC.
Interested in borrowing a StoryWalk® or including one in your next event? We'd love to hear from you!
