READING TOGETHER

Confident readers,
one book at a time.

Trained volunteers read one-to-one with elementary students at their school, every week from October to May. More than 50 volunteers take part.

How it works

  • Each volunteer reads with three students for 30 minutes each, during one morning or afternoon per week

  • All reading happens at the school, during school hours.

  • Every volunteer completes training session, a school orientation and provides a criminal record check.

  • Students are referred to the program exclusively by their teachers, based on school priorities and individual student needs. Parent referrals are not accepted.

FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS

Reading at home

Enjoyment matters most. Bedtime stories, library visits and used bookstores all help children find books they love. These short "Come Read with Me" videos from Literacy in Kamloops show you how to help.

1. How we learn to read

And how to help your child become a lifelong reader.

2. A 'just right' book

Choosing books and warming up before reading.

3. Reading together

How to read a book with your child.

4. Correcting mistakes

When and how to do it.

5. Unknown words

Helping your child work them out.

6. Sight word games

Learning common words through play.
